FAQ: What is Acupuncture? Acupuncture, a form of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), one of the oldest continuous systems of medicine dating back 4,000 years. It is the most commonly used system of healing in the world.

Acupuncture is a technique of inserting and manipulating fine filiform needles into specific points on the body with the aim of relieving pain and for therapeutic purposes.

How does Acupuncture work? TCM is based on the belief that what happens to one part of the body affects every other part of the body. Organs and organ systems are viewed as interconnected structures that work together to keep the body functioning properly.

One of the TCM concepts is Qi, which is a vital force or energy. Qi flows through the body via channels, or pathways, called meridians. Imbalances in the flow of Qi causes illness; correction of this flow restores the body to balance.

Acupuncture restores the balance allowing the Qi to flow normally throughout the body and restoring health to the mind and body.

Does acupuncture hurt? Acupuncture needles are 25-50 times thinner than a hypodermic needle. They are so thin that several acupuncture needles can go into the middle of a hypodermic needle. There is little sensitivity to the insertion of acupuncture needles.

What do Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine treat? The most common ailments presented to an acupuncturist tend to be pain related conditions. For example: arthritis, back, neck, knee and shoulder pain, carpal tunnel syndrome and sciatica. Traditional Chinese Medicine is a complete medical system that is capable of diagnosing and successfully treating a wide range of conditions including:
