What is NUTRITION?
“The science of food, the nutrients and the substances therein, their action, interaction, and balance in relation to health and disease, and the process by which humans ingests, digests, absorbs, transports, utilizes, and excretes food substances.” - The Council on Food and Nutrition of the American Medical Association
WHY IS NUTRITION IMPORTANT?
Nutrition is one component to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The food we eat contains nutrients that help our body function optimally. [1]
Different nutrients are found in different foods, which is why eating a variety of foods daily is important. A poor diet, lacking the recommended nutrients, and a sedentary lifestyle can lead to developing risk factors for chronic diseases like obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, and cancer. [1]
Eating a healthy diet that fits your needs and lifestyle does not have to be hard — it should be fun, tasteful, and exciting! Starting anything new has the potential to be overwhelming at first, but with the right plan of care and guidance, your nutrition goals can be achieved. [1] Wardlaw, G. M. (2007). Contemporary Nutrition Sixth Edition. New York, New York: McGraw-Hill.
